PRACTICE SUMMARY

Enrique possesses over twenty years of experience in intellectual property law, specializing in complex domestic and international patent prosecution and patent-related client counseling. He additionally provides non-infringement and invalidity opinions as well as clearance opinions and strategies.

He has represented high-tech manufacturers and service providers, and is a direct, hands-on patent attorney with the proven ability to prepare superior patent applications involving sophisticated electronic, software and mechanical technologies with minimal impact on inventors.

Enrique’s patent prosecution and counseling skills are complimented by his extensive and diverse patent litigation experience.  He represents both patent owners and accused infringers in litigation, and regularly conducts pre-litigation analyses, claim construction opinions and related patent-litigation evaluations.  Additionally, he is adept at issuing client opinions, providing insight on infringement and validity issues, as well as freedom to design around opinions.

Enrique’s clients include high-technology, telecom, medical technologies, computer hardware, aircraft navigation technologies, semiconductor design and software firms.  Enrique serves each of his clients by gaining an understanding their technology, area of industry and business objectives.  He provides his clients with diligent support, crafting effective strategies to protect key intellectual property assets.

He has extensive experience in preparing and prosecuting patent applications in a broad range of industries, which include telecommunications, VoIP telephony, wireless voice and data communications, computer networking, antenna design, business methods, software, medical devices, GPS, control systems, interactive television, audio and video processing and communications technologies, audio and video communication, semiconductors, and laser technologies.

Enrique acquired expertise in electrical and software technologies as an engineer at two Fortune 500 companies.  Prior to practicing law, he served as an engineer with Abbott Laboratories for over seven years, developing embedded software systems in diagnostic medical equipment.  Enrique also served as a hardware engineer at Honeywell International, designing hardware for fire safety, security, and building automation systems.

Enrique previously served as a partner at McDonnell Boehnen Hulbert & Berghoff LLP (Chicago), one of the city’s largest intellectual property boutique firms.  He also practiced at Dentons (Chicago), a full-service national firm, and Brinks Hofer Gilson & Lione (Chicago), a nationally recognized firm specializing in intellectual property, trademark, and Internet law.

He has also served as a pro bono advocate, successfully representing two immigrants seeking asylum in the United States before the Immigration Court of the Executive Office for Immigration Review in Chicago and before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit.
